I used to take better care of my horse than myself, but now I take care of both equally--we are a partnership, after all. I guess the awareness comes with age.
Both of us take supplements, and it is amusing that we are both on similar regimes...of course, the dosing is different, and the formulation is species specific (one hopes...).
I try to take the best care of both of us. Being an older rider I feel makes you more aware of how much good health plays a part in daily life. Even though my horse is only 8 I want to keep him healthy for years to come so starting and maintaining a good fitness regime and diet now are key to that. I also take into account his mental health and try to keep things fun and mix in "work" days with just goof off days. I am not a professional rider and he is not a competition mount so I don't feel justified in creating an intense training schedule. I do have goals for us both but I keep them simple and easy. And there are days when he just gets a good back scratching, lots of carrots and long walks on a lead line to graze outside the pasture! I find that often other owners call him "spoiled" for this but it has served to create a better bond between us.
I definitely take care of the horses better then myself. I do try to visit my chiropractor and get a massage every now and then to better assist my horse. How can I expect him to be straight when I am as crooked as the day is long?
I would LOVE to take better care of myself but my money goes in to keeping Lorenzo in the best health and condition possible. Wouldnt change it for the world.
My horses would tell me to stretch more. I make sure they stretch out to stay flexible, but I'm terrible for following up on myself. For years I couldn't fully straighten my legs because my gluts and hamstrings were too tight. I'm getting better now, but I will celebrate the day when I can touch my toes! ~Interesting question~
The horse definitely gets more. ...supplements, massages and rubs ... Good point, thx for reminding me. It's too easy to get wrapped up in our busy lives and forget to stay healthy!
