How do you get in to the eventing scene?
Permalink Closed

Hi all,

I have a young warmblood I am bringing on, and I am very interested in getting in to the eventing scene. I have never competed in the discipline however, and dont really know how to get my foot in the door.

What would you suggest? How did you start?

What state do you live in Lauren? Pony Club might be the best place to start, but there are HRCA clubs in VIC that do run events. EA Qld might be some help, thing is with EA the lowest class is Intro 85cm. The best thing by far is to start by going Showjumping and get yourself confident with jumping stuff, and get a good jumping coach. Cheers Geoffrey

A great coach is the best place to start - they will help you learn the ropes.

I did it when I was young and now my sons are entering their 6th season.

We have a separate dressage coach and an eventing/jumping coach but that is only because I do just dressage so the boys use her for their dressage.

Go to the Ontario Horse Trials site - www.horsetrials.on.ca - there is lots of great information on there.

Hi Geoffrey, I live in WA.

I had actually planned on joining my local Adult Riders Club soonish but Ive been a little put off with the attitude of some of the riders there. I might just have to bite the bullet and jump in headfirst I think.

I jumped a lot in my younger days, but things were set back when I bought a young horse. I think you are both right about needing a coach. I currently have a dressage coach but might be time to start looking at a jumping coach as well.

Thank you both for the tips. I'm just so excited that Lorenzo is now at the stage where we can start doing something a little more exciting for both of us :)

I feel your pain- I was also "set back" with young horses, although I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. Best of luck to you and Lorenzo!

If you don't want to jump right into recognized eventing, try mini events. They are a great way to get a good taste of eventing on a small scale. Find a good coach that can help you with jumping and the courses you may go out on. Have Fun!

Mini events are awesome. I've done a few and had a blast. More barns at schooling show level should organize them! It's a great way to introduce riders to the sport, as well.

Look for a barn that teaches eventing to 4H --- a person like this could help teach you in the beginning and guide you.
