Had the saddle out last night doing a smidge of a re-flock. You know, when the saddle is just off about 1/16 or so of an inch and it's not quite right...
So, I figured I'd start a thread on it. I get my saddle checked about every six months, and it needs a bit of adjustment every 18 months or so. I do ride 5 times a week. I know next year I'd probably need a full re-flock, but I'm hoping to be where I want to be, weight-wise, and then I'll buy a new saddle. Will keep this one, though, it will definitely do the job for when we start the young one.
I get mine checked every six months as well. It's very important to have a saddle that fits well to the horse. I have 14 horses and train full-time, so I'm in the saddle around 14 hours a day, and my saddles take quite a bit. It does get expensive when you have 9 saddles to be checked, but it is well worth it to keep the horses happy, sound, and in correct training. I also check the stiching in all my saddles regularly. Good saddle care is important for both horse and rider.
Go you guys! I've been trying to convert some people in my area to having their tack checked more regularly. They aren't fully understanding of the concept of a horse's body changing, but it's coming. It warms my heart to see that others are fully aware!
We suggest that you have your saddle checked at least once a year - perhaps more in the early years of your horse's life since he will change drastically between 2 and 7. That's what's always so funny when people buy a 'custom' saddle - somehow the expectation is there that the saddle will fit perfectly and forever from day one! And note - it's much more important that the saddle first of all fit you, because if you're uncomfortable this will translate down and impede horse's performance - no matter how well it fits him!
