Time to wean
Permalink Closed

Well, little man got the go ahead from his vet to wean any time.  He's looking great, he's very independent.  His mom doesn't care where he is at any given time.  For his part, he doesn't care all that much either!  I'm kind of glad that it's my Mom who is going to start putting him out with his soon to be buddy, a filly who is 6 days older than he is.

My vet, who also breeds warmbloods is very impressed with the little guy.  It was a good cross, it's only too bad that my Mother refuses to do it again, citing that she's too darned old!  And it is her mare now, so I guess that is that!

Awwwwww!
Sounds like you've got a clever little fella on your hands. You guys are going to have a riot together. And you never know...you mom may be won over!
What breed is the little man?

He's half giraffe. Just kidding, his Mom is a 17.3hh Canadian Warmblood (Holsteiner/Selle Francais), by a 14.2hh German Riding Pony. We think he'll land about 16.2hh, which would be perfect. I just love him.

Unfortunately, his Mom foundered very badly two and a half years ago, and we've just found out she's rotated again, so I don't think she's going to be much longer for this world. She's a sweetie, and I would have loved another baby from her. But she leaves a gorgeous legacy.

So sorry to hear about your mare.  It sounds like she will be leaving you with a lovely legacy in the colt.

Any photos of the little guy?

Also, I have always wondered, how do you wean without causing incredible stress to mother and baby? There must be a good system that some people use.

The little guy is my photo at the moment. I should post others.

Havoc is very independent, so we started quite awhile ago taking his Mom out of the field for short times, moving him around while she was in the cross ties in the barn. Then moved to putting him in the adjacent paddock for a few hours. The mare doesn't care at all.

So then, when it was time to start in earnest, we put him out with the other baby in the field he's used to. There was temper tantrumming. But, the weather was fine and they just have to work it out. We've had snow for the last 72 hours, so he's been half days (12 hrs) in a paddock (Havoc, his Nanny, then his Mom), he does well with that. Soon comes the transition to going through the night. The thing is, babies will fret and fuss. You try and minimise it and get them through. We're lucky that his Momma cares naught. When we re-unite them, she hustles down to see if there's hay, while he's running backwards trying to get a drink...

Sounds like you have a good system in place. Yes, please do add more photos! Your little guy is gorgeous and it will be fun to keep track of his growth! :)

Well, Havoc is FINALLY weaned. He decided on Monday that he was going to be a big boy and he's happily out with his little girlfriend. He's been great to handle too, since he decided to put on his big girl panties... or big boy ginch, whatever. I can't wait to see him again.

Will make sure that we get more pictures over Christmas and will post. He's a cute little bugger if I do say so myself!

glad it went well for you - to me the first day is always the worst - but I do a gradual weaning usually. Rushed this year's a bit because of time constraints but mom and daughter are happy to be together or apart and everyone is quite happy.

We went with the gradual, then weather kicked us in the butt (a week of -30), so we had to back off. Then, back at it, and he took a couple days and decided that he was ready to be a big boy. Besides, his momma was now going inside at night. He whined to his auntie and then settled.

And, he's decided that since he was all about being a big boy, his leading and general ground manners are much improved. Babies are lovely, but one heck of a lot of work. I'm very lucky that my Mom owns his Mom, and is currently little boy's caretaker.

Glad the weaning went well for your handsome boy, it makes it that much easier when the mare is thankful to have her freedom back aww
