What is everybody intending to read this winter by the fire? I'm a bit of a new comer to Dick Francis (started reading his books last year -- was very sad when he passed this year, maybe Felix will keep writing?), but I just picked up Shattered and Dead Heat to crack open sometime over the winter

I must admit that I don't tend to read horse-related books. Years ago, I read Black Beauty to my daughter (not knowing what happened in the book). Well, I couldn't finish it, we were both bawling so much!!
Dead Heat was a really good one! I'm in the process of trying to order "Another Kind of Cowboy" by Susan Juby. Since it's one of the only books I have found that actually is a dressage STORY..not a non-fiction informational book. =]

When I saw the heading I thought about animal communications (readings) but that is just my world.
If you have Dick Francis' books, you are in for a good read! I have most of them, read one by accident 20 years ago because I was bored one day (it was "Proof") and then I was hooked! My favourites are Straight, Dead Heat, 10 lb Penalty, The Edge, To the Hilt, Driving Force, Longshot - most of them are re-read so many times that they are quite worn.
At the moment I am reading the true story of the racehorse Cool Dawn (by Dido Harding, his owner) - and I love the books about Desert Orchid and Aldaniti too. And Seabiscuit of course. Books about Ruffian (Burning from the Start) is excellent, but naturally has a sad ending. Walter Farley's book about Man O'War is super great too.
There is a series of light murder mysteries set in the dressage world, the author is Carolyn Banks (5 books) but I don't know if they are out of print now. They are excellent and also quite funny. "Showstopper" by mary Monica Pulver is also great - murder mystery set in the Arabian Horse Show world. Might be out of print by now.
Barb -- My boyfriend and I watch the movie only once a year, we sob all the way (I just watched the Ruffian movie not too long ago, prolonged it for like 3 years because I knew the ending was going to be a rough one).
Roka -- The first Dick Francis book that I read last year was by chance as well, and it was To The Hilt, I just started Shattered the other day. I didn't think it was a series that I would get hooked on, but Dick Francis himself had an extensive back story, which is why I decided to finally bite the bullet and read something of his, now I'm addicted! Also, if you have a good animal communication story, you should start a topic and post it, very interesting!
I'm going to look into the other books mentioned as well

LOL why? And what do you understand by "a good animal communication story" anyway?
I have some great stories on my website, on the testimonials page - link is this: http://www.divineenergies.dk/testimonials.html Written by the owners and printed verbatim as I got them. Not all animal communications go well though - some have gone horribly wrong (because I had to learn something from it, or the owner did). I think that is something all animal communicators go through on their spiritual journey.
I am reading the young-adult Tortall series by Tamora Pierce. In the first two of her Immortals Quartet there is a teenage girl with "wild magic" and can communicate with animals. Her pony mare, Cloud is one of the most believable fantasy horses I've read. These books are "Wild Magic" and "Wolf Speaker". In Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small Quartet ("First Test", "Page", "Squire", and "Lady Knight" is another horse character, a destrier (war horse) named Peachblossom who is also quite believable. All of Pierce's Tortall novels are good reads. These are the best with horses as main characters.
I just thought you might like to share some stories on animal communication with us, that is all.
I'll think about it. But because of the confidentiality issue I will in most cases need the owner's permission and that makes it a bit difficult. I don't have any of the communications saved, nor the owner's emails anymore cos they were on my old computer that crashed earlier this year.
