Here are some pictures of me driving Roger, my mother-in-laws cob.  It was his first time pulling the cutter. He was so good and we had a blast!

Cute pictures! Looks like it was a blast! Is it very different driving with a cutter than with a regular cart or wagon? I've only driven in a cart just a few times; I'd love to get back into it.

Its a little different as it does not turn very well. The skiis just cut into the ground if you try to do a sharpish turn. You just have to do really wide turns, thats all! It feels pretty neat as it is an original cutter (it was just restored and repainted last year) and you can feel the wood boards shifting underneath you as you go along. Its a really cool feeling! And its so light! I can move it easily with one hand. I drove him for about 30 mins and he wasnt even breathing hard and he didnt sweat on little bit! His carriage is much heavier and I need 2 hands to move it anywhere.

That's really cool! Is there any sort of competitive "industry" in cutter driving, or is it mostly just a "well, it snowed..." type thing? I've seen them before but really know nothing about them or the history. :) Very cool that you and your family have access to such a neat piece of equipment.

There are not many original cutters left as they dont have much of a purpose now. There are not many competitions with them either as you never know what the weather will be like and its so hard to organize around it. Last year the snow was terrible and it was so icy we were not even able to use it as it was too dangerous. We have it for fun. When the weather is nice and theres some snow I will go for a cutter ride. My mother-in-law bought it at an auction (at Barkeys) 2 years ago and she had it restored last year. We had to wait for a year to use it though as it was way too icy last year to even try it out! This year looks like so far, it will be a good year for cutter rides!

Diamond_Jubilee, great photos! My boyfriend and I seen you and your pony at the Royal, we were just making our way in as they were pinning the class, but you were lined up on our end of the arena. You certainly can't miss your boy with his stockings, he looked great! biggrin

Thats cool Nikki that you saw us at the Royal. What night did you see? Roger was so good for his first time in the ring (even with a full class of 15 and a run away! He just stood there like a pro! At the end of the class he did not want to stand, so we have all year to work on that). I was very proud of him for everything else though...so good for a 4 year old!
