Have you read...
Permalink Closed

I know there have been a few other threads about horse literature before, but I'm interested in what you all have read as far as communication with horses. For example I'm a big Monty Roberts fan, so one of my favourites is The Man Who Listens to Horses (by Monty Roberts). I've heard that Dancing with Horses by Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling is a good read, and I'm hoping to pick it up at the library along with his other works in the next short while. What else have you read? I think I can also add John Lyons' "The Making of a Perfect Horse" to the list. What else have you got? Any suggestions?

Equine Behavior: A Guide for Veterinarians and Equine Scientists by Paul McGreevy, hands down (for me anyways!). It is a bit pricey but well worth it, I treasure my copy.
Getting in Touch: Understand and Influence Your Horse's Personality by Linda Tellington-Jones is an insightful read, I haven't read it in years and was thinking of finding a copy to browse through as a refresher, it is a fairly quick read.

True Unity: Willing Communication Between Horse and Human by Tom Dorrance

Has anybody read True Horsemanship Through Feel by Bill Dorrance?

I learned a lot from Henry Blake's books, "Talking With Horses", "Thinking With Horses" and "Horse Sense".
Robert Vavra's "Such Is the Real Nature of Horses" is very good too, about learning to interpret what the horses are saying.
This year I picked up "Horse and Pony Body Language Phrasebook" by Susan McBane with 100 entries!
Henry Blake for one, believes in horse telepathy, he even did some controlled experiments (just with his horses in his stables, lots of horses), and he also discusses how to guide a horse with telepathy, I can't do it because I can't think in pictures.  VERY good reads!

I read Henry Blake's books, "Talking With Horses", "Thinking With Horses" and "Horse Sense" years and years ago, they are great.

I have read Monty Roberts books (the one called Horses in my life is great) and I am a huge fan of Mark Rashid's books, have all of them except the first. I also have Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling's books - the one on horse personalities is great. Also books by John Lyons and Buck Brannaman are great.

Being an animal communicator myself I of course have read a few in that genre - the first one (way before I discovered I could talk to animals as well) was Nicci Mackay's Spoken in Whispers, really an eye opener. A few others are From our side of the fence by Sandy Lagno. Connecting with horses by Margrit Coates and Pet Whisperer by Sarah-Jane Le Blanc.

You might also learn a lot from Tom Robert's books, "Horse Control and the Bit", "Horse Control and the Rider", etc.. He's an Australian, very good, many excellent ideas and methods, and a deep understanding of the horse.

I picked up a book, more about dogs but they are some horse stuff in there. It's Called "How to behave so your do behaves" by Sophie Yin. It talks about different training techniques that following the same principle can be used on almost every animal. I'm only 60 pages in yet. So there is probably a lot more. But it is geared toward dogs...
