I came across a post on Chronicle of the Horse that got me thinking. For you trail riders, endurance riders, or riders who otherwise spend time "off the beaten path", do you have a GPS device? The question in the original post concerned applications for Apple iPhones or Android powered devices that will allow one to track where they are at, distance traveled, trails, etc. So, do you use an application for your phone, or do you have a GPS device dedicated solely to navigation? OR are you totally "old school" and use a map?
Personally I don't trail ride much, but when I do, I don't go too far. I generally stick to trails that are easy to identify, so I don't find the need for a map/gps much. I think if I were to take up riding over vast distances, I would probably have a GPS device dedicated to navigating, as using apps on a phone would wear the battery down pretty fast, which can be a problem in emergency situations. I would probably also carry a paper map with me with marked routes, just in case!

I have my phone with a map on it... but I haven't gone far yet either... I am an aspiring trail rider, old and hopeful that I haven't started too late. ")
My phone is capable, however, *I* am not. I just ride where I want, when I want, and rarely want or expect company of any kind, other than my horse : ) I tell someone where I am going, how long I think I will be and what horse is with me but that's it.
