Saw some pictures of new top hats, made by probably the best custom hat maker (in The Netherlands) which actually have safety helmets inside.
haven't seen pictures of anybody actually wearing them, but just sitting there, they look very handsome.
I saw a picture of one before where someone had just had a very large top hat made to fit over a regular riding helmet - it wasn't pretty!
(Of course, this isn't an issue for me - I'm not riding at FEI levels - but I am glad to see that someone has come with a way to keep riders safe while still following tradition.)
Not surprised at this actually. The Western discipline has had several models of Western hats with helmets incorporated into them for quite a while now. I like the idea very much.. 'Specially for those that don't care for the helmet scene. Personally, I enjoy my self-sufficiency so I wear a helmet every ride but understand the tradition of Dressage and all that comes with THAT : )

I was thinking about all the 4-H books I got the pleasure of reading as a young child (cough...cough) and remember the western hat helmets of the 90's. Too funny! I imagine they looked similar to the giant top hat over the helmet deal. This is neat, though! I wish more riders at higher levels would exchange fashion for safety, even if it does mean breaking tradition and looking silly. You will look more silly in a hospital bed... :\

I saw the same picture of one over a helmet, it wasn't pretty. I started as a kid in the hunter/jumper, so we always wore a helmet (how effective they were, well, I don't want to think about it, it was a long time ago!), and continue to wear them now. I don't get on my horse without one, she's not that predictable, and I make my living on my brain.
I would have worn a regular helmet in the FEI classes, if I ever got there, but it's nice to see they are actually working on something that is a good compromise.
My trainer is NOT happy about the new rules that require helmets for Training through 4th level, she figures if you are over 21, you can make your own choices, and I agree. However, it doesn't make a difference to me. I just think it's too bad that we have to legislate this sort of thing.
