Still a Michael Matz fan, will be til forever : ) And I will always defer happily to Mr. Morris, even if I AM fat... he is right : )!
There is also a local trainer near me that is mighty impressive (to me). Horrid clinician* but speaks clearly to the horse without a hint of threat. Ever. Says only and exactly what he NEEDS to say, no more, no less. The horses "get it" every time : ) He is quite reasonably priced, too.
* he is not a man of many words, gesture or volume to begin with and I am sure it is beyond difficult for him to meet a classroom of needs (public speaking weaknesses). He is a horseman genuine, not a peopleman, seems to be a common condition among the Real Ones...

My favorite trainer of all time is Debbie Barham Campbell down here in Midland, NC. I am soooo lucky to be able to take lessons from her!
I LOVE watching Debbie train. She gets through to the horse without any drama, and she gets the horses to understand her. If I ever got a new horse I would turn it over to her without any hesitation.
Lendon Gray, for her no nonsense approach to dressage and proving a small horse with correct training can hang with the big guys.
Reiner Klimke, for his practical systematic approach to training happy horses.
Henry Blake, is not well known but his books really explain how to train, I love his ability to understand horses and and promoting understanding and compassion.
I'm fond of Bill Dorrance's techniques described in "True Horsemanship Through Feel". Also very fond of Monty Roberts and his ways of going at things. Definitely not a "natural horsemanship" nut, but I like his gentle nature and way of going with horses. (Both of them, actually).

Little late on this one, but I love Clinton Anderson, Buck Brannaman, Monty Roberts, and Julie Goodnight among others. I'm also really impressed by Guy Mclean's horses though I haven't actually seen him train.

Oh- I forgot to add why they're my favorites. Clinton is one of my favorites because I love his no-nonsense approach, Buck Brannaman because well, Buck Brannaman, Monty Roberts because I am in awe of the way he communicates with his horses from mustangs to thoroughbreds, Julie Goodnight because she's really easy to watch and really explains why she does what she does and why she is getting the results that she is. Guy Mclean because his horses are SO impressive, and he seems to have a wonderful relationship with them.
