So my my mother and I share a car which normally works out wonderfully. However, the Fjord is a very, very hairy beast and I always come home covered in his hair and of course the car gets a thorough coating of horse hair as well. Today, after hopping on the Fjord for the first time, bareback, (he was pretty great by the way! He had one little fit but he's wider than a couch so it wasn't bad at all!) I left a nice dusty bum print on the driver's seat.

The issue? My my mother is really allergic to horses. She can't drive without her eyes getting all red and puffy - it's quite bad!

Ideas on how to solve this issue without me having to clean the car everyday and without her having to take claritin ever time she needs to drive?

Same suggestion: A seat cover of some type? Or a pair of coveralls/riding clothes that you can change into and out of at the barn so as not to bring horsey stuff into the car at all....

Pony is a cutie-patootie, for sure!!

Unfortunately there's not really a spot to change clothes - it's a standardbred training barn so people are in and out quite often.

A seat cover is a good idea - why didn't I think of that!? I'm kind of poor (and cheap) though so I'll likely just use some garbage bags.

Hi, Kathleen:

I'm really allergic to horses too, so I can sympathize with your mother.  Because I'm allergic to horses (among other things) I've found a way to keep the hair under control to some extent.

I invested in very lightweight nylon windpants and a windbreaker.  I wear them when I groom horses, and pull them off to ride, so that my riding gear stays pretty much hair/dander free.  I have my own barn and arena, so I don't have the issue with the car that you have, but I need to ensure that as little hair and dander as possible ends up in my house.

Your situation's a little different, so I would suggest you make the same investment, but pull the wind gear on over your riding clothes after you ride, to protect the vehicle upholstery for the drive home.  The hair slides off the nylon (especially if you use fabric softener in the laundry), so you should be able to wear the same gear for several days before it needs laundering again.

I second db's suggestion, particularly if you're on a budget. Coveralls/Overalls are pretty expensive and won't necessarily keep the hair out of things. Windbreaker stuff should do the trick, if you don't mind looking a bit ridiculous ;)

Well, the car decided to break today as I was on my way to the aquarium store. Can't accelerate past 60kph without it feeling like a massage chair. I am not a happy camper. furious

 

Windbreakers are a great idea though - I'm sure I can find some that are barn fashion friendly.
