The barn I am at just got a donkey - I am in love.
He's very suspicious - took me half an hour to convince him to let me catch him. Once he figured out I just wanted to brush him he was quite agreeable. However, once the blue spray came out for a small wound he had, he wouldn't let me catch him again. Silly donkey.
He's such a cuddly guy but on his terms. I absolutely love his personality. He is apparently broke to ride and I can't wait to get on him. It will be sooo much fun.
So does anybody own a donkey? Or do you just have a good donkey story?
One time I went to the farm of a mini donkey/mini mule and standard donkey breeder. She took me out to the pasture to meet her breeding standard jack, a sweetie named Honky. I asked if I could get on him a little, just to see how he moved. She said yes, however there was no halter or lead rope, we didn't even have a piece of baling twine on us. She ventured that if she walked in front of me it would probably be fine, Honky seemed fine about the idea, so she gave me a leg up. So I rode said donkey bareback and bare headed for around two minutes. I offered to buy Honky but, of course, he was not for sale. Such a SWEET equine! He did not seem to understand leg aids though.
Used to ride a donkey when I was first getting into regular horsey-ness. Love them, they are so clever and you can hear them literally miles away when they are not impressed with something!

I used to own a mini jack; sweetest little guy you'd ever meet. Could be kind of a stinker though, his mouth was right at the level your hand hangs at when you leave your arms hanging at your side while walking through the pasture/etc... so occasionally he would come up and nip your fingers. A bad habit I never broke him of, but he didn't do it often and usually I could catch him before he did it. I'm a huge long-ears fan. :) Plan to have a trusty mule in the not-too-distant future.
