Taking off w/ a previosuly injured and abused horse
Permalink Closed

My mare was one of those horses that was "crank" ridden and as a result her SI joint in her back was severely injured. She is sound now but there isn't much for muscle in that area after being in a pasture for a year and a half.

Just recently when I ride her, she has decided to take off. We had this same problem before she went on pasture and she wasn't like this until just recently.

What are some things I can try? I try half halts, but she runs through those. And I hate having to ride her in a circle forever.

I'm leaving in a week, so I'm just trying to make her and I's last ride or two enjoyable. Once I leave my mom will just be doing groundwork with her.

this is my personal opinion its your choice how you wish to deal with it

for a start, if there is no muscle I wouldn't be riding...

I would go to this link and get the re-mouthing dvd... I would also go back to the roundpen, start with groundwork which will in turn help her build muscle up, then once the muscle is there and the mouth is there.. then go for it... if you do this mouthing method as it recommends you will have one of the softest horses around and you will also have a tool to stop any bucking and bolting.....dont be afraid to email him, he has a blog on his site where he answers your questions
