They appear to be a combination of different mineral such as calcium, potassium, magnesium. I especially like "Natrium muriaticum", what we would call table salt. I have seen websites which promote different salts, using these fancy chemical names to make people think they are something special. They are just a way of replacing electrolytes, which is important in hot weather, or after illness. I have used a little epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) for my horse when he was spooky, and it may have helped. I think he'd had a little too much alfalfa (maybe too rich in calcium), so the mag helped balance him out. If you've ever been to hot mineral springs for a soak, you know what a good mineral bath can do for your system. An old fashioned, but effective remedy.
Although I don't know a great deal about homeopathy, my understanding was that Schuessler developed his treatment as not part of homeopathy (although he was obviously influenced by it in the earlier years) and he used stronger concentrations and was looking at these salts in their natural concentration in the body, and how the body might benefit from restoring these salts in the body. At any rate, I think he was ahead of his time, when you consider he was developing his theory of treatment over 100 years ago, and I would bet his treatments caused less harm with fewer side effects than many pharmaceuticals do today.
Although Schuessler worked with 11 basic cell salts, others have expanded this repertoire to include other salts. Some are quite powerful (and dangerous if misused) and used in medicine today. Lithium comes to mind. And I had a dog once with severe seizures who eventually could not tolerate the usual prescribed medication(phenobarbital) for it, who I successfully switched(carefully and gradually) to Potassium bromide, a salt.
