I was just reading that Joey the main character horse in the upcoming War Horse movie is actually played by 14 different horses! The article goes on to talk about how the horses have a longer career on the silver screen than many actors do, very neat You can read the article here: Horses That Should Have Their Own IMDB Page.
I'm super excited to see this movie, I just know that I'll be blubbering the whole time!

I know, I want to see it so much too! I hope they don't do silly things like so many movies do and assume we won't notice that one "brown" horse is not the same as another "brown" horse.
Lol Trouble Horse, that reminds me of a made-for-tv horse movie that I watched many years ago. I can't recall the name now, but the "mare" was a gelding :)

Why don't the people who make these movies realize that it's horse people who're watching them ... and will therefore be able to tell the difference! I feel insulted whenever I see that kind of shenanigans. Did you ever see the horrible Black Stallion tv series? They would use a Friesian for some the shots -- totally different than the other Araby type horse in other scenes.
or shoes on - 'wild horses'. My friend remembers watching little house on the prairee when she was a kid and 'laura's mare had a little extra bit dangling in the breeze in one scene. Some of these movies -crack me up...- the Heartland TV show - which hubby likes for god knows why - has me cackling witch...- but then I'm not the 'target' audience. Re. War Horse. My friends all want to go...they are planning to stick me in a far corner of the theatre...cause i'm gonna be sobbing...I bawled like a baby at the trailer...sigh
One movie I can think of where they seemed to use the same horses throughout is the new version of True Grit. Well, the Appaloosa looks the same, anyway.
I'll bet these horses know they are 'stars' though...horses always seem to know when they're being important....they're way way smarter than people give them credit for -- they just have a different intelligence. My horses - Canadian (mine are both big 16 hands) -Canadian Horses were used extensively for war - were bred as war horses initially - to carry soldiers --used in the American Civil War and used in World War I shipped over -- Everyone laughs when I refer to my horse as a War Horse though...he's fussy about footing, spooks at just about everything....- they tell me the first shot fired -he'd likely have dumped me and said 'see ya back at camp'....they call him a "Princess" - he has a mean piaffe and canter half-pass....I'm gonna be a wreck when I see that film...
Would love to be horse wrangler on movie set...that would be an interesting job I think...
Goatgirl, I totally agree! I know a lot of horses who know when they are infont of the spotlight -- a good example would be Zenyatta dancing before races. One of the horses that I learned a lot about riding and showing on when I was younger used to throw a fit if we trailered out for a weekend show without him. He was generally a very laid back guy, he'd stand for hours while we fussed over him grooming etc. and he was a very patient teacher with us on his back, but the few times we took a 2 y/o in his place to a show the stable hands said he was a nightmare for the weekend! He'd run the fence line on turnout all weekend and stand squealing in his stall, the complete opposite of his usual temperment. Even when he was in his late teens, he'd spark right up going into the show ring. I know this is an extreme case, but I've always thought that horses know when it is their time to show off and some of them really enjoy it
A wrangler on a movie set would be so neat!

I was finally able to get out and watch War Horse -- I thought the acting on the part of the lead horse (Finders Key) was very well done. The beginning felt a little like Black Beauty, but otherwise I really enjoyed the film Has anybody else seen it yet?
PS. Finders Key is an ex-racehorse, which I have a soft spot for, so my thoughts of his acting ability may be a bit off due to this reason

The horses in War Horse are lovely but of course don't look enough alike. They aren't even the same shade of bay sometimes! Also, the way they "trained" Joey to harness was hilarious! And the main guy was annoying. Other than that it was good.
