Interesting little read that I wanted to share with everybody, apparently scientists have traced the all important "speed gene" found in racehorses (and other horses of course) back to a mare from Britain who lived 300 years ago. Very neat!
Very, very interesting. Apparantly there is also a T gene which is for endurance. AND a gene for the extra big heart. Boy, the TBs got all the good stuff! This makes me wonder if the original TB breeders went to the heat racing (for mature horses 4 mile heats, at least two heats to determine a winner) because the Oriental blooded horses and their crosses had more endurance than the native British running horses. I know that when the General Stud Book re-introduced the Oriental pages to its stud book (for Arabs, Barbs and Turks) they discontinued the experiment when it became obvious that reintroducing the Oriental blood slowed the horses down so much that they could not win races against the pure TBs.
