I'm trying to get my 7 month old colt started on beet pulp. The lil' bugger won't eat it. I've tried feeding it to him plain, warmed up, with molasses, oats, molasses and oats together, with his favourite treat, I've secluded him in the corral with a bucket of the stuff for a couple hours, I've put his mom in their with him in hopes that he would nibble beside her (which he didn't).
I guess my obvious questions is, does he have to eat beet pulp? Is he really thin or not drinking enough?
If he does have to have beet pulp for some reason, can you start with just a tiny bit mixed in with the oats and molasses and if he eats that add a just tiny bit more?
Well, um, no not really. He's a very healthy weight. But I mix white earth into it for the horses as a natural dewormer, so he kind of needs to eat it. Plus we're showing him next year and we want him to be all shiny and stuff so and being the organic freaks we are, I add crushed flax to it as well.
I feel like an idiot for not having tried to start him out slow.
White earth is known by it's big name as diatemacious earth...(I spelled that wrong, oh yes I did!). Anyhow it's crushed/ground fossils that is used to kill bugs (cuts them up and dries them out) treat scour on calves etc. And in other use as a dewormer that is safe for everyone (people, cats, dogs, horses)It's great for horses that have IR/EMS etc. since checmical wormers can trigger laminatic incidents, it doesn't take care of bots though as far as I know, so once a year after a long hard freeze I have to cave. You can find more info at www.whiteearth.ca They can give you a better low down on it than I can.
