At what age did you start riding?
Permalink Closed

I've been riding since I was 6, however I didnt get my first horse until I was 20. My mum owned and rode horses before she had myself and my brother but unfortunately it was no longer financially viable to continue her hobby after that. She always let me have riding lessons as I was growing up and for that, i love her to bits :)

And now, after 26 years, she has bought a youngster and is training him up and getting back in the saddle!

So I ask....

How old were you when you started riding?

Were your parents supportive? Or did you start later on in your life?

What got you interested in horses in the first place?

I started age 5, both brothers ridebiggrin, sister did for a little while then discovered boysno!! Mum and Dad both rode. That was 43 years ago!confuse Dont know where that time went. hmm  Oldest brother runs a TB stud in the Adelaide hills, Next one is a race horse trainer (or should I say chase horse trainer, they are always chasing the one in frontashamed) I coach for a living. My sister had 5 kids, so no time to ridewink, I did manage to get one of her kids to ride, she's now a jockey in Adelaide.
I married a horse rider from a polo background and got her jumping. We have two kids 9 and 6, boy and girl, both ride, Nick rode at his first Royal this year. So the dynasty continuesbiggrin.

I started when I was 9, at the local riding school (here in Denmark, most small towns have a riding school, or did back then in the 70's). I wanted a horse as my friend next door got one but my parents didn't want to give me one as I knew nothing about horses and they would get stuck with the daily care, so they sent me to take lessons and learn to care for them. Then when I was 13 I got my first pony which taught me a lot. I have had horses on and off since then and have owned my current one for 19 years. I don't ride anymore as I am disabled in my leg and my Icelandic is retired as well; however, I enjoy caring for the 2 horses at my place. Today I have them right outside my back door, which I absolutely love! smile

Because I work spiritually today I can now see that the reason I loved horses back then was to subconsciously obtain the spiritual connection that I had shut down - but that is another story! aww

I started when I was three years old being led around on summer camp ponies.

I rode every summer at camp, being terrified the whole time, but showing up at the stable day after day nevertheless.

Obviously there was something stronger than fear that was driving be to those horses!!

Here I am a million years later, completely addicted. :)

Got bucked off for the first time at the age of 6, first riding experience as well. Started riding regularly when I was 9, and got my first horse at 13. My Mother wasn't really supportive of the whole riding ordeal (in and out of my life for a long time), but it was my Grandmother that always made sure that I made it to the barn on time. She is still my hero for always being the one steady person in my life, as well as being the one to listen to all my horse related nonsense even though she only has minimal knowledge of equines. aww

I was eight when I started. Have been going for eight years now! My mother is very supportive of my career - though we do not have the money to purchase the horse I need in my career right now. I don't remember what got me interested though...

Spirithorse- no such thing as too old! My mom started a few years ago after watching me ride around for so long.
Erika- I'm in a similar boat. Everything will fall into place though. The best of luck to you. That's wonderful that you have the support of your Mom

I started very late in life, 43. I am now 46 and loving every minute of it! There are different challenges being an older rider. You are not so willing to risk your physical well being and fear does often play a factor. The best way for an older rider to start out is on a very well trained, older school horse. That was how I started. I had to build my skills and confidence before I could move on to other horses. Also when I made the decision to purchase my first horse I again had specific requirements that were difficult to meet. I needed a well broke, good minded horse that would allow for me to make mistakes but also not just "give" me the ride, make me work for it so I learned. I was very fortunate to find such a horse and paid a considerable amount of money for him.

My parents always said that I was riding before I was born, because my mom rode until she was 6 months pregnant. However, I have pictures of my dad holding me in front of him in the saddle and I was maybe 6 months old.

Awwwwww that's very cute.
My 'little sister' who is in actual fact a close family friend practically grew up on the back of a horse...whenever I was in charge of baby sitting her, I just put her in front of me on the saddle and rode away.

I took a few lessons as a teen. Regular lessons after college. Showed for years. But only really learned to RIDE when I moved to my current trainer.

My mom always  said I was riding before I was born.  I was 2 weeks late and the day I was born my mom went to a horse show and rode in it.  She won the High Point Trophy for the Pleasure riding.  After the show, she went home put the horses away and went to the hospital to have me.  She told me she was bond and determined to have me and it worked. I have been riding an showing ever since I am now 48 yrs old.  My mom and I did a lot of riding and showing together.smile

I began riding one year ago...at age 16. Right now I can comfortably trot, go over the smallest jumps you can think of and at least manage a walk bareback. My canter...is getting there. Gotta love nervous riders!

My parents are the worst people ever. My parents do NOT support me at all. My mother is decent with it, I can't say she supports it, but she doesn't vocalize it, and she has watched me ride. Dad, tells me when ever he can to give it up so I can have money. He also told me not to go to vet school and to work in a trade. He has never watched me ride, doesn't think it's a sport, doesn't see the beauty, strength, stress and work that goes with it. He thinks it's easy and a waste of money. He refuses to watch me ride. or even enter a stable.

I started riding in November 5 years ago and got my first horse 5 months later. I currently have 4! I ride every chance I get. Learning to ride has changed my life and I continue to love learning as much as I can about these amazing animals and how to be the best horse-person I can be.

Alhoss- Good for you! I love your picture, too. What kind of horses do you have?
Emiry- I'm sorry that's the case. Good for you to stick with it. Your parents may come around, but even if they don't, this isn't for them- it's for you. And dont' worry about the canter, it will come! Keep us posted...

Horse-hearted,
Thank you!
The one in the picture is a 14 yo ottb named Lazz. He is a free-lease but I dont ever want to give him back. He's a big goober and I couldnt love him more! smile.gif
I have a 13 yo large mini, named Lucky. He's a chocolate palomino and very sweet and also fat. (my fault b/c he keeps Lazz company and Lazz gets a lot of hay in the pasture. He is a great baby sitter and buddy for Lazz but I need to do more with him.)  He was given to me when his former owner got divorced.
I have a reg bay tobiano paint filly. She just turned 3 in August. She is actually the foal from a mare that I had that passed away from colic complications back in June. I called her B and she was an amazing horse that taught me so much. I knew she had had a foal before I bought her but hadnt seen her. 2 months to the day that I put my mare down I found her filly on craigslist for sale. My uncle went right out and bought her for me. We couldnt let B's baby be anywhere but with us.
I call her Fergie. She was only halter broke, so I am doing all her training (thus far) myself. She is amazing like her mother but very different. Much more calm.

And last but not least is Amigo, a 4 yo mustang/quarter horse cross. He was untrained and dangerous when I got him and I have done all the work on him myself. He still bucks me off at the canter but I am determined! He is awesome for everything else. (I have checked out all the usual bucking causes and its just attitude. I have done a lot of work with him since the last time I asked for a canter, its just now Im a little gun shy.)

My mom grew up in the city but she loved horses, she took lessons and went to camp as a teen. After getting married she moved to the country and got her first horse. So we had horse before I was born, and have always had horses, I've never lived without owning atleast one horse. I started getting ponied around on horses when I was about 2 or 3, I showed in leadline classes from age 4-8. When I was 10 I started riding seriously, and have been riding ever since(I'm 16). My horse I ride the most is a 13 year old appaloosa gelding, I've had him since he was born, he was born when I was 3. He is out of my moms first horse.
We now have 11 horses. After a few years of lots of riding and showing I've fallen in love with miniature horses. I now own 9 and have started breeding them and I show them ALOT in the summer. I do still ride, I have 2 riding horses, my appy who I ride western and english, he's my all around horse, he's taught me alot, and our bond grows more everyday. He's amazing. I also have a thoroughbred, she's my english & jumper horse. She previously showed on trillium, and I hope to do that with her again.
My mom is so supportive since she loves them to. It's sort of a mother daughter hobby now, my other 2 sisters aren't as interested. My moms really great though, she drags me around to all the shows, holds horses at the shows, gets them ready, and she'll even be showing next year. She helps me look after the horses, since it's difficult with school. She pays for all the feed, vet, farrier, tack, buying the horses, stud fees, everything. My moms supported me with the rescue cases I've done. I honestly can't thank her enough, she's amazing, and I'd have to same I'm extremely lucky to have her and be living this life.

I started as a tiny kid, maybe two or three, as far back as I can remember. It was the 25 cent trip around the yard on Sundays after church. Then it was Saturdays, too. Then we took over the neighbours' animals. What helmet? What vest? What BRIDLE?? In those days folks actually took in ponies to see the kids come and play. The Age of Litigation had not yet descended upon us. Ed the Naughty Pony will forever live happily in my fondest and earliest memories : )

I was not allowed to take formal lessons until I was 8 or so because I was so little. Got my first horse as a ten year old.. Yes, green on green, but it worked out as I had no fear, lots of horsey friends, wasn't ALL that green for my age, had a good trainer and the time and passion proportionate to a child born in freedom and limited wealth.

Riding is a fine activity, I have been fortunate to have had a grand and desired career as a rider but since I have aged and broken over the years, I have come full circle to appreciate those quiet, soul-moving moments in the barn or field just as much if not more. I see my animals thru older eyes now and there really IS so much more to see : )

Everybody who started so young are so lucky. I'm 22 and only started riding at age 21. I wish I had my whole childhood to be riding and spending time around horses. But I guess it doesn't matter how old you are, as long as you enjoy it :)

Alexandra, I have found most people who rode as children did not (for whatever reason) carry on riding when they were adults. You can look forward to riding through adulthood, which is longer than childhood biggrin.gif

I started at 9, but it was very basic my instructor and I didn't didn't get into much, it was a class of like 10. when I turned 10 I went to Skyline Farm which was amazing. Suddenly we were doing more then trying not to fall off, we actually had to learn postion and balance. At my first barn basically it was a good day if you didn't slip off.

And then at Skyline we started going to shows and doing so much more!!! Its really cool!

It's true, people ride even into their sixties! which I think is cool. It's what I'll be doing :) And I don't think about what I didn't have, but the fact that I am able to ride now.

I have no idea when I actually began riding. I got my first horse at age 9. A 20 something year old Appaloosa brood mare who had been stuck in a 12x12 outdoor stall with no cover for the past zillion years having babies annually with no attention. She was definitely quite the learning experience for me ;) We had are arguments but she was a good ol' girl. Started regularly riding shortly after the Appy when I got another 20 something year old Arab mare (as seen in picture to the left). To this day she has taught me more about the world than any book, person, video, clinic, teacher, etc ever has. Sadly we lost her in 2005 due to extreme arthritis. I'm nearly 19 now, and currently horseless, but I plan 150% to ride through my entire life. We'll see how well my already arthritic knees are doing in 60 years, LOL.

:) Thanks for sharing the stories guys. It's uplifting to read a lot of these.

As a kid I trail rode in Chile and Uruguay for around 4 years, starting at age 6.  Then I did not get to ride but 4-5 times until I got my first horse 9 years later.  Then I got severely disabled with MS after 14 years of riding and rode rarely (0 to 1x/yr.) for five years.  So I guess you could say I learned to ride three different times, not very well in South America, much higher level of riding in the USA, and then learning how to ride within the limitations of my handicaps.
I'll be 60 in May.  I plan to ride as long as I can.

I probably had my first ride on a horse around 2 or 3 years old. My grandmother and aunt shared a farm, so I had been visiting since birth. I started lessons when I was 9 (this is all guesswork here) although I had been doing little informal lessons on my grandmother's horses for years, but they had been more of the pony ride variety. When I switched barns about 3 years ago (or is it 4 now?) I realized that my last instructor hadn't been teaching me the correct methods of riding, what a waste! She would point us at a jump and tell us to go over it, without teaching us proper position, how to lengthen and shorten, etc. I am still very surprised that someone so unqualified allowed to keep teaching.

My parents are supportive, although they discourage it as much as possible, if that makes sense. They don't want me to be trapped down by horses the way my aunt and grandma are basically trapped on their farms with no help. They only want  me to make good, educated decisions, which I wholly respect.

Vienna - it's nice to see that your parents are supportive, yet want to make sure you are informed in your decisions. Getting into the horse industry as more than a recreational rider or a casual competitor can put a huge strain on the finances, as well as on the brain! I'm glad that your parents want to make sure you know all the hardships of getting involved, but are still supportive of your decisions. - If what I got from your post was correct, I mean ;)
:) Ride on

I started when I was 6, my aunt and uncle have a Morgan breeding farm and she started teaching me then. It's been 22 years now and it is something I will have with me always and hope that my children will want to do as well.

My mom is super supportive and keeps at looking at horses to buy lol i need a leash on her.
My dad however hates horses and blames everything that goes wrong on the horse akaabad grade although the lowest grade I have ever gotten was a C at the university level... an I am always A or B+ with the odd B.
