Recovering from a T12 compression fracture
Permalink Closed

Hello,
6 weeks ago, I had a fall off a young horse and managed to compress my T12 vertebrae. I have been in a back brace for the last 6 weeks and am hopefully going to be out of it soon. I have luckily been relatively pain free through the process (other than the first 2 weeks) and I hope to be back on a horse as soon as possible.

I was wondering if anyone else has had the same sort of problem, and how they got themselves fit to ride again.

Thanks

Dillinger, I have no advice to add here, but I hope you are back in the saddle soon!

Which is the T12? So sorry to hear about your accident!

The T12 is your last Thoracic Vertebrae. Basically it's your last rib. I hope I get the OK soon, it's SO tough to take it easy.

I fractured my T12, L1, L2 when I was younger (compression fractures) and also have end-plate fractures of T4 and T7.....so I can probably tell you anything you want to know about riding with a broken back!
Make sure you are completely pain free before you get back on and it's really important to do stretches to help keep yourself flexible (believe me it's way worse when you don't do them!) Also, strengthening your core muscles will help support your back.

Hi, Dillinger:

I fractured L1, L2 and L3 in a skiing accident 35 years ago. For the most part the injury has not caused me problems in the saddle, but that all changed 18 months ago when I fractured my right wrist. Hiking around (and riding) in the sling for 3.5 months made me crooked, not so much in the saddle as on the ground, and that compensatory issue has caused me seemingly endless problems with my SI joints and hips.

Just a week ago I started riding in a ThinLine Ultra Thin half pad, on top of my saddle pad and under my saddle. The pad doesn't look like much, weighs nothing, is inexpensive, and has completely lived up to its claims! I ride in custom made saddles, checked and adjusted every 6 months, and none of my horses have ever had sore backs, so I have every reason to believe that my saddle fit is fine. Adding that pad has been a god-send, as I am not sore now after riding any of the horses I have in training.

The pad has been endorsed by spinal surgeons as a answer for compression-related spinal problems, and it certainly works. You might want to give it a try when you're back in the tack.

I hope you feel better and can get back at it soon.

Well, I'm happy to report that I have been out of my brace for two weeks now, and my last x-ray confirms that everything is staying where it should. I'm about to start physio, and I'm thankfully allowed to start riding again in January!

Hi

So glad to hear that everything is staying where it should!

Would love to hear details of your physio therapy as I have a similar injury but it´s because of cancer so is pretty much ongoing.

Hope you are making progress.

Best Wishes  Carol
