Trail riding etiquette

What are some tips for riding in a group on a trail ride?  I have been on several rides with what I can only term as " bad" riders.  Some not able to control their horses, some afraid of everything, some showing off.  What is the best way to handle those types of riders?  I stay as far away from them as possible but they really make the ride unpleasant for all.

I love to trail ride It's so relaxing. You are doing the right thing by staying away from those who aren't acting apropriately. Some times a horse will act up, but be curtious and move away from the group to do your disciplining. If your horse has a tendancy to kick, put a red ribbon in their tale, that will notify other riders. A green ribbon for a green horse is the same thing.

Know your horse. Will he get excited off the other horses, or is he the rock? This can dictate what you need to do in these situations. My best advice is be aware, even if they are not, and try not to make these group rides a habit, or your equine may develop the same things!
I truly dislike big trail rides mostly because I find that many riders aren't actually 'riding'. They are sitting on there horse letting the horse do whatever while they chat. Chatting is great, but let's do it over tea....this is my training time!!!!
