hello, i have just been told about this site so i thought i would give it a try. i have a new horse to me that seems to be giving me a bit of trouble. the horse is a 11 yr old gelding that i purchased at a sale. he is a reg. tnw and very nice. i have a major problem with him in that if i leave him in a small area behind my barn i can catch him anytime. when i move him to a large field i can never catch him. i tried for 3 hrs. one day trying to catch him with a treat, feed and then nothing. he is very smart about that. he will eat out of my hand and when i go to reach for his halter he takes off. i finally got him with a lasso and once the rope went around his neck he just stood there and let me rub him bridle him or anything. i have fixed and area so that when i bring him in to feed i can close a gate on him. i have been working with him by feeding him and then walking away so that he knows everytime i give him feed to catch him i am no going to be riding him. no much luck. does anyone have any other ideas or advise for me. i really like this horse, but if i cant catch him like my others i will have to take him back to the sales. anything you can think of trying is appreciated.
About your horse. He's sending you a very, very strong message I'd say. Listen to him! He's reading you like a book. Knows exactly what you want.
You don't have to outsmart him. Make it fun for him to be around you. You can use a treat but don't have to although in much cases it will definitely help. Find out what he likes. Spend time in the paddock with him without asking anything of him. Just sit down, ignore him and if he comes to you that's fine if he doesn't that's fine too. After a while, get up and leave. After a 30 minutes you come back and repeat this. Make him curious about you. Be there without paying attention to him, let him come to you.
If he comes to you, make it fun for him. Give him a good scratch, pet him where he likes it but leave it up to him what he wants, when he wants it. Show him all you want is spending time with him nothing more. Depending on how he reacts you can slowly build on that but always leave it up to your horse what he thinks is fun.
Good luck.

my younger son had this with his new mare - it takes a bit of time and for the first while we left a leather halter on her so he could catch her - a neck strap sometimes works too and is the next step from a halter - eventually when the trust is there she let him catch her. sometimes it just takes time.
If there are other horses in the field feed them and ignore him - that may work too.

Hi Tonya, Have you looked at the Body Language group? http://www.barnmice.com/group/bodylanguage There is a LOT of good information there that may help you.
Hi tdryden, you might like to post this under another part of the forums (if you haven't already) because some people may not be looking here often and you may miss out on some great ideas that could help you with your horse
