Under don't try this at home...
Permalink Closed

Okay, we have a cold front coming in, the temperature is going to drop about 20C, that's 36F.  DO NOT try and ride a difficult mare when this is happening!!!  Especially if you can't find your trainer's running martingale.  There was much kookiness.  I will say, the mare is seriously through when she's being insane.

Perhaps this is why one trainer said... "she's not what I'd call an amateur's horse"...

Oh well, we ended well, and my butt was still in the saddle, so we'll call it a weather phenomenon and carry on.

Hang on, Mags!!

We have wind issues here. Gets cold but the frequent wind brings things thru the air at fairly high rates. My neighbours all have children and apparent cash: plenty of toys, many inflatable. Need I say more? Yard looks like a Toys R 'Us lot at Christmas . Picture this: inflatable superman flies on over, no invite mind you. I am riding in my beautiful and expensive riding ring, on my beautiful and inexpensive rescue, obviously waiting for the arrival of who-knows-what/who. Was not disappointed. Let me tell you: SM has NOTHING on me : )

just....hang on, Mags : )

She did earn the moniker '17 Hands of Fury'. 99 rides out of 100, she's delightful. That last one is the reason people don't like mares!

That's an understatement. We have three mares, I love mares. The barn owner and one of the ladies there just really do NOT like mares. When Snip was pregnant, we kept calling the baby "Folly", because it was going to Pure Folly, and a girl. We only decided on Havoc in the couple hours before he was born. He's my first boy, and, of course, the ladies at the barn are thrilled, but I really did want a filly. I suppose I'll see what the other side has to offer.

I know the girls can be difficult, but if they are on your side they will bail you out when they should spit you over a fence. My old girl threw me back in the saddle on course one day. My dressage mare doesn't fuss if I lose my balance. Okay, they have days, but mostly, they are lovely ladies.

My best friend has mostly owned mares, she loves them! I'm neutral on it, I prefer a gelding because he *hopefully* has no interest in breeding. But the one mare that I did own, she was a saint and we put her through a lot of unpleasant situations. She had a grade 1 club, but the previous owner tried to make the hooves look the same, she moved beautiful and natural once we got each hoof to how it naturally wanted to be and she never once tried to bite me (or the farrier) through the process aww

An acquaintance at the barn decided to ride her 3yo filly the other day in the indoor arena - with gale force winds blowing outside. The acquaintance ended up at the emergency room - had to have surgery for a broken pelvis. (Saw the acquaintance at a meeting last night - with a walker - but up and around - as opinionated and feisty as the filly I think!)

The ladies at work think I got the horse I deserve, as she's just like me. Must be the case there too...

I'll remain grateful that only my pride and an ankle have been damaged thus far... (I exclude brain damage from multiple concussions).

I hope your acquaintance heals well, and learns from this...
