Today we had the Chiro out to do a bunch of horses, including my little Maggie. Now I'm a bit twingie about chiropractors, but the gentleman we use is actually a human chiro and a horse chiro and does some high powered horses. Anyway, Maggie likes him and he does it correctly (short lever, no mallets, that sort of thing).
I haven't used one in the past but I am about to start using the same one that adjusts me for my horse in training. My chiropractor sounds pretty similar to yours in that he doesn't do anything weird and is very willing to answer any questions I have and explain why he does what he does etc.
I have used chiropractors in the past for my horse - though I'm too afraid to go to one for myself. Because I've moved around a bit I have used 3 different ones over the years and found a lot of diversity in their approach and technique. I definitely feel more comfortable with softer adjustments.
yes - absolutely - we have a fantastic chiro for our horses - she has taught us all the stretches we need to use on our horses, talks about what is wrong if anything and the horses love her.
We can definitely tell when someone needs something and see the results as well.
