just gelded but...
Permalink Closed

Hi everyone

We just had Julius gelded on Tuesday.  when I went to walk him yesterday, there was a bit of bleeding but not enough to cause concern.  What does concern me tho, is that
1) the wound is open
2) for the first time he is smelling the mares (didn't before)

also, how long before the stallion behavior (front feet action) goes away.  I thought it was supposed to go immediately....

confused and worried.....cry

I just gelded my 3 year old in July - yes the open wound freaked me out but it is necessary and must drain.

Took about two weeks for the full testosterone to be out of his system - and he was bred a few times as a two year old and as a three year old. Actually has a foal and one on the way.

Put him back to work on the long lines in a month and backed him a month after that. He has now been under saddle for 2 1/2 months - so 4 1/2 months since gelded. About a month ago I started riding with other mares in the arena and at 2 1/2 months after gelding he was back in the field with other mares. He still tries to breed one - sort of - but it doesn't really work. He may always be interested in the smell - spring will be the real challenge - but by then he should be well on his way as a dressage horse so I am not worried. He has a great attitutde.

Good luck - I am so glad I did my boy

Thanks for the reassurance Prospect.

he seemed ok last night when walked. The trainer told me that some need to be gelded twice. They can't reproduce when they are gelded (obviously) but if the vet doesn't cut far enough, there is a ''whick'' in there that if not cut, they will keep the Stallion attitude.
Has anyone seen this?

I would rather have a Stallion, then a gelding who thinks he is one...

I guess only time will tell...

Just had 2 scares....!!!

Walked into the stables on friday night to find him leaning on the wall in his stall, dinner not touched, head low, stiff as a board!! He did NOT want to walk but we forced him. He had no fever but thought he was starting a colic.
After 45 min of walking, there was a poop!!! a nice one too... kept walking for an other 15 mmin and an other one! yay! he didn,t want to lie down when we brought him to his stall. We watched him for a bit, he seemed a lot better.
Also that day, the stablehand told us he had bled quite a bit but it seemed fine when we were there.
Yeasterday, he seemed better, then after he 20 min walk, he started bleeding, a lot.... had to call the vet as we were all in a bit of a panic. He was there in 15 min on a saterday night, drove in like a race car driver (I am so keeping this vet!!)
Result: it was a blood clot. He is fine and healing very well....

What a stressfull weekend....
