Ideas for dealing with rubs on my horse's neck?
Permalink Closed

Hi All,

Ever since we clipped my horse, the reins have been rubbing and marking his neck in one spot. There must be something I can use to get a bit of the hair growing back and also to stop the rubbing.

Tomorrow, I will be using fleece on the reins right where the rub marks are, and this aft. when I left the barn, I put some Penaten (zinc based) cream on the two rub patches, but other than that, I am out of ideas.

What is a "liquid bandage" that I sometimes see sold in the drugstores? Would that work? What about something from Dr. Sholls for feet that get rubbed?

He will have 10 days off over Christmas, so perhaps that will help.

Sometimes just giving the horse time to allow some hair regrowth works as well. You could try different materials for the reins to see if that works. You could protect the neck by wrapping the area with an old polo. You could try vaseline or baby powder on the area of the neck that gets rubbed as a protectant before the ride.
