They are all true, true, true. I think about the one "Give me time to understand what you want me to do" to be such a sad "truth". I think about riders who get so mad at the horse for not doing immediately what they want. Imagine if someone spoke to you with a really heavy accent, or if they kept changing their instructions and then punished you for not doing what they asked. We have to be so compassionate toward our horses and always blame ourselves first. Every day.
Very true Barb, a horse will give you the answer that it *thinks* you want. This may not be the answer you are looking for the first (or 5th) time around, but it is only natural for them to answer in a way that they understand and know instinctively first. It is up to the handler or rider to try again, asking maybe in a different way and rewarding when the question is answered correctly (or if the horse is going in the right direction). This takes patience and keen insight on the handler or rider's part. We're working with two very different languages (instincts), one needs to be aware and understand this.
