double bridles and curb bits
Permalink Closed

Hey everyone,
I've been looking into getting a double bridle and I've gotten stuck on the shape and weight of the curb bit. I was wondering if anyone had any info or opinions on what would constitute the a soft curb bit and a harsh curb bit in terms of the the height of the curb and the thickness of the metal. Also, what about types of metal?
I'm looking for a soft bit, because my horse has a fairly sensitive mouth.

The shape/height of your horse's pallet will dictate what is comfortable more so than the bit alone. For a sensitive mouth, a shorter shank with a flatter port and moderate thickness might be a fair start. The thickness of the bars will directly address the comfort, not to mention the hand that rules the conversation, ultimately : )

It is not uncommon to end up going thru several bit arrangements to find the right fit/effect for both of you.

Great advice from Justice. I use a bit with short shanks and a low (but not flat) port. The bit is of moderate thickness.

Do you have anyone else in your barn who rides in a double? If so, take the time to try different bits, but always start off with the mildest and make sure the entire double is well-fitted.
