This is very upsetting, indeed. I suppose you could blame the economy, but I think the racehorse industry is big enough that a single purse could care for these animals properly for a great deal of time. This is truly sad to see :(

This was also the topic of the day on Fugly Horse of the Day, Blog... http://fuglyblog.com/ All Charities should be accountable for every penny and all the horses they support be checked on routinely. Just giving money with out any safeguards in place is like giving Dracula the keys to the blood bank. JMO As usual the poor horses are the ones that suffer. :(
I agree with you entirely, Lee. Giving money blindly to charities without checking back on them to ensure that the money is going to the specified causes is ignorant and harmful to those who are actually educated about the situation and proactive about where their money is going. I wish the animals did not have to suffer due to the ignorance of the human caretakers :(

I realize that it is a poor economy and most of the funds coming in are most likely non-profit through fundraisers etc. but if the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation can't afford to look after so many horses than they need to stop taking more horses on because the end result is sickening.

An update on the situation: The Mellon estate has ceased to give the TRF any more funding. The TRF has fired Dr. Stacey Huntington, the vet assigned to evaluate the horses at the more than two dozen facilities sponsored by the TRF. Read more at the link above or check out the Barnmice News group for updates :)
James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club says that The Jockey Club will be standing behind TRF and their endeavors, despite allegations made in the March 17th article in the New York Times by Joe Drape stating that there were horses in poor health under TRF-sponsored care.
