Zenyatta no longer in foal

:( I read this earlier in my Facebook news stream. Though I'm disappointed that she lost the foal, I'm optimistic about the next go-round.

I do worry though that perhaps this could happen again? What do you think? Is this a common thing in maiden broodmares?

Just read of this myself. Sad, indeed, but the year, and the mare, are young yet : )

Might be that the mare was still too fit to take? I know young female human athletes' training and fitness levels can interfere with their "cycles" and development rates (delaying) due to extreme fitness at such a young age. Perhaps a similar theory applies here?..even tho 7 isn't ALL that young in a horse, I suppose....

You make a good point, Justice. Although she's reaching "middle-aged" quickly, she hasn't been off the track too terribly long. I think perhaps that could be a very viable reason as to why she couldn't take and keep the pregnancy. I hope Rachel Alexandra's being off the track a bit longer (I believe?) will help her keep her foal. :) I guess we'll see!

Total speculation on my part. I am breeding issue-ignorant.
