Western Riders!
Permalink Closed

Yes, you! biggrin How many of us here are Western riders, or at least have an appreciation for some Western sport? A lot of forums I have noticed are h/j or dressage based. Who out there sits the ol' cowboy seat?

I'll start by saying that's all I've ever ridden (though not all I've ever been interested in). I've got a deep interest in cutting, reining, and working cow horse type stuff, but I started off on barrels. I'd love to do some team penning when I start riding again (horseless currently), and maybe take up some roping.

How about you? :)

The Wade has a bit of roots here in the Northwest (I'm from Oregon), and with two of my favourite horsemen: Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance. Very neat :) I'm still trying to figure out any information on my big ol' roping saddle that has been so trustworthy for me for so many years. A small saddle maker from Arizona is responsible, but I've got no history on him. :)

What kind of horse do you have? :)

I excell at riding the neighborhood ditches (grin) and show both my mares WP, SMS, Halter, HMS, and Trail. As a youth I barrel raced and pole bended around the province. If it was done with speed I did it!! Have never ridden anything but western, although dressage intrigues me a wee bit.

SMS? Enlighten my confused mind, please! biggrin

As a younger youth (I'm barely 19 this Sunday, sooo old!) I did a lot of barrel racing, but never competed. Just around my own farm. Dabbled in some cow work when I lived amongst a herd of 50 (+ calves - the rancher was less than pleased with me eventually... but I was 12, what's a horse-obsessed girl gonna do?!)

Now that I've graduated high school and have my sights set on University of Guelph's Equine Science Program, I've been trying to educate myself a bit more about the performance and training world as opposed to just trying to teach myself how to ride. :) Definitely never a dull moment! biggrin

SMS - Showmanship at halter. Loved the speed events as a kid (eeeek 40 years ago....) but will watch my daughter chase cans, and I will amble around on the "Golden Cadillac" (as we call my elder mare). And actually with an unbelievably fantastic spring weekend started today....I think I'll enjoy anything outside with the ponies. Happy Easter Everyone!

Cowgirl through and through here --- spent many years doing the Western Performance horse scene, my very top favorites are trail and cutting. I was fortunate to be started in both cutting and dressage at the same time, and tossed right into the world of all-around events. I've also been lucky enough to ride horses between Ontario and Texas, which really founded being a "cowgirl" for me, ranch life really calls to me and I hope to own a ranch in the future with an emphasis on starting young show horses.

Currently I am horseless due to university though, looking forward to getting back into the swing of things sometime in the near-ish future. aww

pbm - Gotcha ;) I think maybe some day showmanship would be fun.. when I'm too old and crippled to ride (which should be never, seeing as how I'm the type to climb in the saddle despite broken limbs/casts on/etc). Luckily I escaped it in my 4-h days. Can you tell it's not my favourite? LOL

Nikki - I can imagine how fun it would be to be thrown into dressage and cutting all at the same time! Of course, if you're totally new to both, I bet it could be pretty overwhelming, too.

the horse ranch i work on has paint and aqha, halter and cowhorse, cutting prospects, etc, i and when i get my own place plan to get in to, paints, but, will always have a couple solid aqha mares and or geldings around as my greater half loves solid horses lol i just love them all, whn i do this i am planning on running around six mares to eight, which will take me a few years to aquire as i am picky and as the horse industry is changing, i want my mares broke rode proven shown to add something to there name i do not belive that i will carry my own stud as i would prefer to breed each mare to a stud that would compliment her and add to and or breed out any faults, i do not think that i would breed more than four a year depending on demand, i would prefer to do the leg work and not over breed and have un wanted horses and also do not want to take the back yard breeder stand point, i base as much importance on the mare as the stud, any thoughts on this? lol i do not want to change the thread, sorry got rambling. the equine science program you are taking are you taking it online i was looking into it as the on line course would suit me just fine.

The Equine Science Certificate/Diploma programs through University of Guelph are online, yes. That's how I will (at least) start taking mine.
I am glad you put as much emphasis on the mare as the stallion! Responsible breeding means finding horses that compliment each other and fill in the gaps for each other conformation and temperament wise. Also having a solid program to test for genetic diseases and disorders is on the top of my list for good, qualified breeders.

I will be starting mine in the Fall of this year. That is a large pet peeve of mine, too ;) I don't like when people don't thoroughly research what they're breeding to, buying, trading, leasing, etc etc. Vets, farriers, specialist, no matter their qualifications, need to be checked into and have great references. Animals need to be free of genetic diseases and have conformation fit for the job at hand, as well as be 100% sound when purchased/sold/etc. :) Can't stand dishonest people, either!

lol people that lie steal and cheat are not my kinda people i tend to easily right off people that way, but hey sometimes fewer friends gives you a better chance of having a way better relationship with the ones you have, we had problems with the vet here and pulled everything, including our dogs now we drive anhour and half round trip, but better care for the animals is well worth it.

You should take a look at Western Dressage ! Its growing like wildfire . Western dressage gives riders a progressive , horse friendly way to develop a partnership and body control of your horse.
I have been riding and coaching western dressage for years, and it is super exciting to see shows and clinics popping up around the world.

Welcome to the forum, Ark Equestrian! :) Can you tell us a little more about Western Dressage and how it differs from reining and regular dressage? I've seen some booths at expos before advertising for Western Dressage, but I've never checked it out.

Hi all! Western riders in this house too! Our young teenage daughter and our horse(fairly green) are just now learning reining.(hopefully off to some shows next summer) I've always ridden western as a kid and now just puddle around the arena on our mare. (she's never been out trail riding, yet) Husband has only ridden a few times, but he does enjoy it, when he gets a chance. (our mare is too dainty for him)

Emiry, I hope that your coach is successful! Team penning is a lot of fun and it really helps to develope the rider's skills while making for some handy horses too. biggrin
