The barn that I ride at currently uses wood shavings (pine) for bedding. Several of the horses there have some degree of respiratory problems (ranging from mild to more severe), likely resulting from dust.
I have read that recycled cardboard shavings are dust-free, highly absorbant, soft and cushiony, and cheaply priced, but I have been unable to find any suppliers in Ontario to get an idea of what the cost/availability of the product actually is. If I can find the appropriate information or locate a supplier, I could relay this to the barn manager to try to improve the air quality for all of the horses at my barn.
Does anyone here use recycled cardboard? Is it actually dust-free? What are your experiences in finding the ideal bedding?
Thanks for any help you can give me on this topic!
