In this economy....breeders with herds of 60 horses....? Producing almost 20 foals...in a year...and breeding without regard to possible genetic defects that would cause pain and death to the foal...

I just met someone -  spoke with someone who does this and feel physically ill...disbeliefno

maybe i am sheltered..in my little world..or naive...I don't understand why??  How can they care for that many horses...

I have never spoken to anyone like this before...

Unfortunately I am seeing it more and more. A friend of mine and myself casually cruis around Dreamhorse every night and discuss various horses based on their ads and photos/videos, just for fun. We have both been noticing a lot of people with excessive amounts of horses for sale. Mainly gaited horse sellers, but recently a group with several warmbloods for sale. Our best guess was they were training and selling on consignment. This is not the same case as you are stating, but is still mildly sickening to see that upwards of 30 horses are all under one trainer's care (for sale.. let alone how many they have that are not for sale).

In regards to the high numbers in breeding barns: Who can say for sure what the motive is, but my instincts tell me more product = more profit. Plain and simple. It makes me sick, too. :(

it happens all the time even more so with the price so low as it is good time to get stock then the added backyard breeders etc it makes everything so much more attainable at a low price, some ranches run lots of stock some people just breed to try to make money even if it is just going to the slaughter house sad not helping the over population problem at all. i am pro slaughter but i would like people to actually try and do things with said horses before going straight to the local aution in the end the horse business is the same old ugly turn your head away business to some people and it is sad i myself only think broke horses should only be bred too other broke horses to achive said mind set,and to enhance and better ones shortcomings i think the days of horse ranching are coming to a short end and in the end the owners and breeders that have put the time and effort in to making great horses will prevail, of course there is alot more that has to be set in motion to do this.
