How'd you get your start in the horse world, what was your "I'm hooked!" moment?

I was fortunate to befriend a girl in school whose parents owned a big facility, the first time that I went for a sleep over at her parent's place we went trail riding all afternoon -- that was my "I'm hooked!" moment. aww

When I was 13 I started working as a helper for a local vet because I loved animals and wanted to become a vet. I had been horse riding a few times on rented horses and really enjoyed it but couldn't afford to rent often. The vet acquired a young two year old filly (as payment probably from someone). He had tried some of the local horsey kids to ride her but she kept bucking off all comers. Grown cowboy types were too heavy for her (never mind the fact that even in the good old days that riding a two year old was just a bad idea). So he kept asking me to ride her, which I told him I was not keen on, and she needed an experienced rider (who had a clue how to train a youngster?). Finally I agreed, expecting to be her latest missile rider. But to my surprise she didn't buck me off. So I just took on riding her, knew nothing about training, couldn't afford a saddle, but eventually we went on little rides, and gradually longer rides, just about anywhere, she adapted to traffic, bridges, baby jumps, etc.. At the end of the summer the vet sold her to one of the kids who she originally bucked off, so I didn't think that was right. But by then I was hooked on riding and graduated to another horse. I still couldn't afford the horse or a saddle, but the owner said I only had to pay for shoes. That one was an arabian, which is how I got hooked on arabs.

Loved horses all my young life, but did not get envolved until I was 17. Did so on a cattle ranch in SE Montana. That was all she wrote, been hooked ever since. Live and breath horse horse and more horse.

I was three years old at summer camp and we were walking around on ponies on a hotwalker. One of the riding staff rode up to us and did a controlled rear like a cowboy in a movie might do. That was it for me.

Mom wanted a daughter who'd love horses as she had as a kid. I must have gotten the hint from her in the womb! I was fascinated by any animal as a toddler, but had a special affinity for horses. The first recognizable drawing my folks saved from my early childhood was of a pony, complete with saddle and bridle. I'm sure Mom cultivated this horse interest, but it didn't need much encouragement. I adored horses from the get-go.

Vacations in Colorado spent at my Great-Uncle's ranch included time with and on the ranch horses. I was in Heaven! Dad took photos of me on "Chief", Cousin Henry's Palomino stallion. I was 5 years old the first time we visited the ranch. I believed Chief was The Greatest Horse Ever.

I figure I'll quit riding when I die, or I'll die when I quit riding!
