Teenager dies after fall from horse

August 21, 2011
An 18-year-old girl died after being thrown from her horse in Ontario, Canada.

The accident happened on Thursday in Erin Township. The victim was named as Kassaundra Davis, 18, a resident of Erin Township.

The Wellington-based Ontario Provincial Police said officers went to the scene on Wellington County Rd 124 after at 6.34pm call.

They found David with no vital signs.

Investigations revealed that Davis had been visiting the farm and took her horse for a ride.

As the horse was ridden away from the barn, it turned suddenly and bolted towards the barn. The victim was unable to gain control and was unseated.

She struck her head on the ground and was unconscious and unresponsive. Efforts to revive her failed.

She was not wearing a helmet and rode bareback.

David was taken to Guelph General Hospital by paramedics, where she was pronounced dead. The coroner, Dr Ian MacPhee, was called to the scene and requested a post-mortem examination.

Firefighters from the Erin Fire Department, as well as paramedics, attended the accident scene.

Oh no! What a nightmare!
Of course, helmets can't stop every tragedy, but they are so easy to pop on, why oh why doesn't everyone wear one??
I am sick for her family. :(

Dittos. Ye gods, bareback AND no helmet. Very sad and, it would seem, so preventable. Sounds like she hit the ground and died instantly.

We did stuff like that as kids growing up in Texas. But for the grace of God, this could have happened to any of us. How we survived childhood is a mystery to me. We played crazy games on horseback, galloped around like mad things, bareback, bareheaded, shorts, sneakers, no sense at all -- and our parents were fine with it all!

Maybe the horses were safer and more "broke" back then. I don't know. We certainly weren't great riders -- primitive, self-taught horse-crazy kids. NONE of us suffered broken bones. We survived our wrecks somehow. Too bad this girl hit the ground JUST so and died.

Very tragic, my thoughts go out to her family. The outcome could of been different if she were wearing a helmet, but you never know I guess cry

so so very sad....again and again I see people riding with no helmet - bareback - even on the side of the road -- I guess because it looks 'cool' - or whatever...-- I just think it looks stupid -- it takes a breath for things to go side-ways when your riding..

finda comfy helmet - there are so many types out there...brain damage is permanent - death is forever -

I make my students wear a helmet on the ground too -- I've been thrown hard by a spooking horse while on the ground...

we love them - but we're no match for their strength or speed -- or weight...

wear a helmet - if not for yourself - but for your loved ones - so they don't have to suffer your incapacitation or death
