Hi there from Saskatchewan! I am new to this site and think it is great. I am, however, GREATLY disturbed by the video link of the donkey being killed. Hey, I am a very open minded person and I did read the warnings about the graphic nature of the video..blah blah blah...but honestly, I was mortified by it and I never even watched the whole thing. I am an ICU nurse with a strong stomach, but I felt ILL after watching just a few seconds of that video. I am ALL over public awareness about cruelty to animals but THIS particular clip was just WRONG! I hate to criticize for it being on the site, but I really wish it hadn't been. I am haunted by the few seconds that I saw. Please try not to put stuff like that on again...please!?! Yesterday was my first visit to this site and that was what I saw...and I had to come back today and join just to beg people not to watch it. There is so much amazing stuff here and I plan to frequent this site but seriously hope not to see anything like that again. Sob....
Thank you very much for your feedback about the video.
The video was part of a news release sent to us by the Donkey Sanctuary, a wonderful charity in the U.K. The Donkey Sanctuary is commencing legal action and I hope something comes of it.
The video was posted by my news editor, who herself has several donkeys and is a huge donkey lover. You can imagine her horror about such a hideous event.
It was an almost impossible call whether or not to run the video, but in the end, as it is on YouTube as legitimate news (posted by a news network in India) and, as we hoped that it would possibly spur viewers to contact the Donkey Sanctuary and become more aware of the treatment of donkeys around the world, my editor and I made the difficult choice to post it on site.
That being said, I completely understand your very valid concerns. Your heartfelt note has caused me to reconsider my original decision and I agree that it is too strong and not in keeping with our traditional Barnmice "fare".
I have removed the video and included a link to it on YouTube in the news release running in our news section. If someone wants to read the entire news release and then view the video, they will know the news story in advance and it will be their decision.
You are quite right that Barnmice RARELY if ever posts videos of such a horrific nature (thankfully videos like that rarely cross my path!).
My goal has always been to run the most welcoming, fun and enjoyable community. I'm so sorry that your first experience with us as a member had to do with something so upsetting!
I hope you will continue to find lots of great content, activities and friends here and I consider myself lucky to have a member who would take the time to contact me as you have done.
Thanks Barbara for reconsidering that post. I did contact the Donkey Sanctuary and forward my concerns to them as well about this video. They run a very valuable organization and we are lucky to have people like them to look after our large eared friends. I am not one to complain and I have NEVER written a note asking any site to change their content, but this video was just too much to bear! Again...thank you and thanks for the note.
