Horses to Dive Off Steel Pier in Atlantic City as Entertainment

Wow, I guess they're not making enough millions from gambling. they're bringing this back as family entertainment. What a sick message to send to kids that this is ok to do with your animals.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that horses will once again be diving off platforms from Atlantic City's Steel pier.

The horses and their riders will dive from a platform 30 to 40 feet in the air, much like the original attraction made famous in the 1920s which featured women in swimsuits jumping the horses off the platforms.

As quoted in the Press of Atlantic City, the act is already receiving opposition:

“The Humane Society of the United States emphatically opposes equine diving acts, which subject the animals to inhumane and potentially abusive situations in the course of their training, transport and performance,” Keith Dane, director of equine protection for the Humane Society of the United States, said in a written statement. “The stress and trauma endured by these animals, in addition to the risk of injury to them, make these acts unacceptable. They are senseless animal exploitation, for the sake of entertainment and profit.

Well, I guess I will have to disagree with you. My mom did it (not in Atlantic City) but on the west coast and for the coronation of Hirohito in Japan at 40 feet (in the 30s)...2x a day for 3 months. I have the pix. Her (pony) mare did it off the dock in Santa Monica initially, the newsreels kept asking how high, and kept building the jump off higher. She did not get run up and off a jump. (However, my mom worked for the vet who financed the one in NJ, and she also won the first three ladies races riding for the same gentleman). She and the mare walked up to the edge, and slid down. Her brother pony did not like it and did not do it even very low height. That said there are horses who hate it (consequently they are run up the jump off), and there was one (who when they were jumped into the ocean) swam away. It depends upon how they are jumped off imho.

The kick board of the one from the 70s is too steep (my mom had to reconstruct those things in Japen to keep the horse upright), but the horse has walked up and chooses to jump, no one can make them do that.
