Dually & trailer insurance?
Permalink Closed

After several years of insuring our Ford F350 dually, our vehicle insurance company  just advised that they consider it to be a commercial vehicle and will not insure us anymore.

MTO considers all duallies to be commercial vehicles (we do have CVOR) but makes concessions for personal use (ie: personal horse trailer, RV etc)

I have retired from boarding, coaching etc and only haul my own horses for shows etc. The truck is registered in my personal name. The trailer is a Shadow 2 plus 1 and the whole lot comes under the weight required for an A license, so I can use my G license. We also have a     5th wheel RV which is mostly stationery but may require hauling occassionally. All these activities are considered personal use by the MTO.

However, because the photos that our insurance company requested showed barns and trailers in the backround, they pretty much accused us of lying, saying "obviously, you are using the truck for commercial use" despite our explaining that we only use it for personal uses.

Has anyone else encountered this problem with their F350 Dually?

I would like to hear from anyone else who has a similar set up (non-commercial) as to what insurance company you are using. After being accused of lying, I am prepared to move all 6 of our vehicles to another company.

Hi JLZ,

I'm not sure if this will be of much help to you or not. My boyfriend has always had all sizes of trucks (1/4, half and well over 1 ton) and he has always used an insurance broker rather than dealing directly with insurance companies to find him the best rates and packages. When he had his F550 insured, it was considered a commercial vehicle due to it's weight and the CVOR on it, but that is fine because he used it on a commercial level anyway to haul around his welding equipment. We were both able to drive it with a G license because it was insured to a certain gross curb weight limit.

It could be that you have a CVOR on the truck, as it is a commercial vehicle owner's registration. Try shopping around though is my suggestion.
