Odd lumps?
Permalink Closed

Last summer around August, my show mare was in a corral for a while and somehow was kicked through the fence, my vet came and was checking her out, and was unsure for about 2 months, but deemed the left over lump scar tissue, but recently the lump has come back larger, and like it did last summer, it has created another sack or lump below it like she had internal bleeding and it dripped down. She doesn`t have internal bleeding though. I am going to try laser therapy for her to remove it as, it is incredibly unsightly as a show horse. any other ideas on what/how to help/remove this?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome Barrelracer. Your horse looks gorgeous!

It sounds like she may have originally had a hematoma (probably wrong spelling!), filled with fluid and/or blood from the kick. I'm surprised that it would refill so many months later. Is there any way to have the area ultrasounded? What does the laser therapy do? Break down tissue? Can it be drained? I had a horse who had a lump from being kicked and the vet drained it. Also, I wonder if massage might help break down some of the scar tissue.

I can't see what laser would do because it can't penetrate far into the skin and what's happening is under the skin. The original hematoma (from blood/bruise) sometimes leaves a bit of a cavity that can contain fluid (not necessarily infected, easily drained but may come back), or can be replaced with scar tissue which takes much longer to resolve. I think your vet should be able to tell you which method might work best.

Thank you, both Marlene and Barbra, I hadn`t really thought about Hematoma, I contacted my vet again, and had her check her out, and she did say that it looked like Hematoma. I never did get drained, because the vet had thought it was a sting or bite because there was no scrapping of the skin, it was a sqaure on kick, so it might have repooled. It is hard, but the lower lump is soft.

Thank you Barbra, she`s know`s it too and flaunts it.

UPDATE- Kassy did have a Hematoma, but it is now a large lump of scar tissue. The vet that I brought her to decided that laser therapy would remove the vast majority of this. Thanks anyways!
