WARNING to anyone hauling in Canada
Permalink Closed

I recently had a HORRENDOUS hauling experience and as I was going through this trauma found out I am not alone and other's have been put through this same ordeal many many times in the past. I purchased a pony stallion out of FL and made arraignments to have him hauled to me months ahead of time with Crofton Transport out of BC. I confirmed several times with my shipper, Trish, that he was indeed on this trip and everything was fine. I sent a deposit and was looking forward to getting my horse. 10 days before he was set to be picked up in FL she emailed me to say her husband had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and she would be unable to fulfill her contractual obligations. I was stunned. I felt sorry for her but was left hanging with a horse stuck in FL and no one to haul him. I took the next 3 days off work and call EVERY company I could find. Few were still making the trip and the ones were happened to be charging 5x what I had a contract for because of the late notice. I finally found someone who was going to NY and she took the initiative to find someone to bring him from FL to NY and even found a place for him to stay in the interim. When I told her who had cancelled on me last minute and why she mentioned to me that to the best of her knowledge Trish was not married and had used this excuse several times in the past. I was horrified. I had spent the last 3 days with no income, out a deposit, and now pay 2x the shipping all because she didn't feel like making the cross country trip she had promised in her signed and dated contract. Needless to say we have now been trying to get a hold of her to recover some of these costs but to no avail, she is ducking us and I am going to have to pursue all this through a lawyer (more $$ out of pocket). I don't want to see ANYONE go through what I did in this situation so I am sharing my experience with you. I hope this keeps at least one other person from being scammed and being out thousands of dollars, not to mention the stress and hassle that accompanied the entire situation.

Geesh, what a nightmare story.
Can you take this person to small claims court for the deposit or is it not worth it?
