Ok, so Im a senior in high school this year, and really need some help deciding what I sould do next! I want a future/career with horses. Preferably to train horses for ppl or ride for a farm. I have decided not to go to collage (mainly for financal reasons). I am currently working at a spotted saddle bred farm, but gaited horses are not my thing, I enjoy working there and learning new things but I want to move on and do something different. So please tell me what would be a good path to take. Like working at a farm in exchange for lessons, or trying to start my own farm. I looked in to like Meridith Manor, I think it was. What do you guys think of Meridith Manor equestrian school? So if some one knows where I could like go to a horse collage (if there is a thing), where I could live/ride and learn. As I said before, I do not have a lot of money.
My end goal is to have a horse barn where I train horses and sell them, but I knew that is a lot of years away, I just need help deciding how to get there!
I don't really know what to tell you about jobs, at least paying jobs! Horse schools? All of my knowledge is from 40 some years ago in the hunt seat field. Any horse school worth going to is going to work you HARD even if you are paying full tuition, for how else are you going to learn what really goes into taking care of and riding horses? I think I saw some discussion on the COTH forum about Meredith Manor, and it sounded VERY expensive and possibly not what you are imagining.
Since you already work with horses I do not have to tell you of the endless hours of thankless hard physical labor that go with working with horses (often with no overtime, I'm sure.) So long as you are ready to deal with all the work (and already know how to do it) and do not go in with starry eyes about all the nice kind horsies (as if!) you will be going in with the right attitude to get a job. At least you have EXPERIENCE!!!!! As to stuff you could learn/teach yourself now, knowing stuff like how to braid manes and tails (and being able to do it well) are a big advantage in the hunter/jumper/dressage showing world. There are professional braiders!
I wish you all the good luck and good fortune in the world in achieving your desire.
Do you have a background with horses, with training or showing? It is a very hard life unless you are a good enough trainer to get someone to support you, or have already trained some horses up the levels. I recommend that ALL my students either do college or some sort of other school. And you WILL be working LONG hours for little pay. MM is really just exposure to the different seats.
You can do the working student route if you wish but this is a very much abused position and at times is closer to working slave. If you want to work with horses the fastest route would be to get a job at Woodbine and work your way up. They are always desparate for help there. This is a pysically hard life and you rarely see old horse people as thier bodies have worn out and they have given it up.
Yes, barnfrog, I do have experience. Have owned a pony for the past 6 yrs and I have been working/training at a horse farm for about 1 yr now. And queenrider, I'll check into Woodbine, Thanks! Thank you everbody for your advice!
